A Literature review from A Ryan, Sarah Penney, Brighide Lynch, Marie O’Neill commissioned by the Department of Health from Ulster University.
“As care homes play an important role in the lives of older people, it is pivotal to understand
how residents’ and their families engage in decision-making about their care and support, and how care home staff support their residents to exercise voice, choice, and control over their lives….
… One of the most important findings emerging from the review is that the implementation of shared decision-making in care homes is highly dependent on the support and nurturing of collaborative and reciprocal relationships between residents, families, and staff.”
