“But the idea behind Strandlund has become the centerpiece of advanced Danish thinking on the care of the aged. And that idea -summed up in the term ”self determination” – is the antithesis of the nursing home (it is, in fact, illegal to operate nursing homes for profit in Denmark). The aim is to enable old people to remain in their own homes and eventually to die in them, unless advanced senility makes it impossible.”
