A SOCIAL MODEL OF SOCIAL CARE

The Covid-19 pandemic has necessitated a significant health care response centred around the preservation of life through robust infection prevention and control (IPC). One of the challenges in this has been to ensure that the distinctive elements of social care have not been lost amidst this focus. I have argued elsewhere that the development of a human rights-based approach to IPC is an urgent task. This is best exemplified in the extent to which the ability of an individual to live in a non-institutionalised setting has been compromised by some protective measures taken within care homes which are first and foremost an individual’s place of residence – their home – rather than an institutionalised environment.
